New Year, New Matthew!

In the past couple months I have been thinking really long and hard about my current lifestyle. In 2014 I got married, traveled to Europe, left the Starbucks store I had spent over five years at, moved to Mountlake Terrace (a suburb of Seattle), and began an internship at (the now defunct) Mars Hill Church. It has been a crazy, turbulent year full of change.

Goals for 2015

This year I plan on beginning, and in most cases completing, a variety of goals. Some of these are easy, some of the are hard, and some I may not even get to. However, the intention is to have things to work toward. A different me to work toward. A better me. If I don’t accomplish all these, that’s okay! The point is that I tried!

Mission Statement

In 2015 I plan to radically change my habits. I want to change what I eat, how often I exercise, how much tv/movies I watch or internet browsing I do, how I make money, where my career and education is going, and especially how I spend my time with my wife and with God. These are just the overarching frameworks, the nitty-gritty of this all will be hammered out the first several weeks of the year.

Goal Check-in #1 (Feb 2015)

One of the things I wanted to do in this blog is to track my progress toward achieving my goals outlined in my big [goals post]. What I think this will look like, at least at the start, is I’ll go down the list of goals and an update on the progress, if any. So here goes:

SELF-IMPROVEMENT & ORGANIZATION

So far from this category I have focused on starting to read more and getting rid of some of my stuff. I’ll have a full write-up of how it went getting rid of my stuff. For now I’ll tell you that I’ve gone through my board games and have chosen ~42% as unnecessary. That’s double what my goal of 20% was! I have also gone through my books, which was successful, and plan to go through my movies and clothes soon.

I’ve been reading more, but I definitely haven’t been doing as much as I wanted to be doing. By now (end of February) I should have finished 1 recreational book and be working on my second theological book. So far I have gotten about halfway through with each category. So I need to bump up my reading for sure!

I also want to increase my reading speed and that’s something that I will be focusing on for March. Which, in turn, it will improve my reading goal in the long run, so that’s a bonus.

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

This is a tricky category because I have to be completely honest and own up to the fact that I’m not accomplishing this one as much as I wanted to be. For a few weeks I was eating a lot better and in turn felt a lot better. But I got struck with some sort of stomach virus which veered me off that path and I haven’t been able to fully get back onto it.

I also wanted to be more active and exercise more but I hurt my back at work a couple weeks ago and that’s really set me back from doing that. Now that my back is better and I’m ultimately stronger from the recovery I plan to get back into running/jogging which will be a good thing for the approaching summer months.

As for the rest the goals in this category, I haven’t really been consistent on honoring them. I regularly go to bed later than I should, I watch more TV than I want to, and I don’t drink as much water as I need to. Hopefully this can be a wake up to getting me into those more seriously.

MUSIC

I have not really even touched anything in this category. Both of my guitars have been at the church so I haven’t really begun writing songs, but I’ve been tossing a few ideas around in my head for covers to do, so I’m going to bring one or both of my guitars home to work on them more and get started recording some demos to polish up. I want to also start acquiring some materials to start prototyping some guitar pedals but I just haven’t gotten around to committing the time or finances into doing so.

BLOG

As it is week 8 of the year, there should be 8 posts up on this blog already. However there is only 5 including this one so I definitely need to step this one up. I have started a note in Evernote to keep track of post ideas I have so I’ll be building that up as I think of them.

Tune-o-matic Bridge on Squier VM Jaguar

Browsing eBay recently I came across I really cheap “Durable Chrome Tune-o-matic Bridge for Fender Jazz Guitar” so I thought, “Meh, what would it hurt?” and I bought it! Shipping was free so I only spent $8.30 to give it a try.
